I love it. I don't care that you were supposed to write abut Bloody Marys. This is way more important.

Haha, thank you Dianne! I mean, the Bloody Mary recipe is great for toasting to democracy. :)

Haha, thanks Mom. And thank you for being my civic engagement role model. You and dad never missed an election day. I thank you for passing that on...and also your strong Democratic values. xx

I’m so glad you wrote this. I am terrified for what this country is becoming. A friend and her family are literally moving to Canada because of the direction this country is going in. I don’t think we can outrun it though, and I’m not capable of leaving. Thanks for these resources. I plan to look into them.

And while I love your recipes, I’m glad this newsletter is more than just that.

Thank you Sherri. Writing letters to voters with Vote Forward is a particularly effective (but also low stress) way to make a difference.

Thank you Leah, for standing up and saying what must be said, and screamed from the rooftops!

Not only in the US, but here in New Zealand, we are terrified of a Trump win, what horrors it will unleash for your country and people, the environment, and the world. If this madness can happen in your country, it can happen anywhere. We are hoping, and praying, and wish we could do more. You have our gratitude and love, Judith

I signed up for a paid subscription when I read your post about losing subscribers because you supported human lives in Gaza and wrote eloquently about taking a stand. This is perfect, better than another recipe (though the Bloody Mary looks awesome.) It puts everything I feel into a coherent narrative. It makes me hopeful that the values of Judaism will triumph over evil if courageous voices like yours are willing to write about critical issues. It's encouraging to know that you think there are more of us than them. Thank you for the post, and thanks to the resources mentioned in the comments.

The "human lives" in Gaza voted for Hamas to the tune of 85%, not to mention murdering their fellpw Arabs to take over Gaza. Over a thousand Gazan ordinary citizens followed the savages into the kibbutzim in israel to rape men, women, children, burn alive, gouge out eyes, mutilate genitals, and destroy entire communities and families.

I love your recipes, but admire your courage even more, Leah. Thanks for putting into words what so many of us feel but have been reluctant to put in print—the urgency of saving our democracy from a madman.

Thank you Ruth! There are more of us (democracy-minded folks) than them (devotees to the mad man). If we turn out, we will win. x

I’m thinking about hosting a letter writing party later this summer or in the early fall - such a fun way to be in community while making a difference.

Thank you.

Monday’s ruling ratcheted this election up to “crawl over broken glass to vote for the Dem.” Again. Can we vote tomorrow & get this over with? Why do I have to wait until November?

I've had to take a break from most media, because all the merchants of rage are doing is making me anxious.

One source I do keep reading is Simon Rosenberg’s Hopium Chronicles here on substack. Simon focuses on what we, the grassroots, can do to help elect Dems up & down the ballot. His perspective is that of someone who’s worked on campaigns for decades. A couple of the things we can do now? Phone bank & write postcards.

Yes! Totally understand needing to take a break from media for sanity's sake. I read Hopium Chronicles too - he and Allan Lichtman help keep me putting one foot in front of the other right now.

Love this! Thank you, Leah, for saying this. We've got to protect democracy -- and that means NOT sitting out this election.

Yes! Not sitting out on voting day *and* doing everything we can to make sure our friends, neighbors, and fellow democracy-minded citizens don't either.

What a disappointment. Start a political substack. As a Jew , with Jewish values, how can you vote for anyone running as a Democrat? Obama, Biden, a total disaster for Israel. Our economy is in shambles. We are on the brink of WW111. DEI is ruining the country. DOJ, FBI etc has been weaponized. One must be deaf, dumb, and blind not to see this. I can go on and on. But I really don't want my one escape, my cooking resources, tainted with politics.

Probably best for you to find your cooking resources elsewhere then.
